A primary concern from teenage acne to adult hormonal acne to the physical scars that are left behind, this severe skin problem can greatly affect a person's self esteem. Acne is generally hereditary and is usually triggered by hormonal changes in the body.
Acne at any Age can be Debilitating! |
|
Causes:
Clogged Pores - when the dead skin cells do not shed from the follicles. Excess oil can cause further build-up
Bacteria - When the follicles are blocked with oil and dead skin, oxygen cannot reach the follicle. This results in bacteria growth, which causes inflammation and pressure. If the follicle becomes infected, white blood cells move in to fight the infection. Pustules that are filled with fluid from the dead skin cells can develop. Cysts then form from the hardened tissue around the infection, which can lead to both depressed and raised scars from damage to the dermal tissue.
Hormones- Male Hormones known as androgens increase during puberty in adults during hormonal such as pregnancy and menopause. Hormones can also change with the seasons.
Stress- Stress causes hormonal changes and increased oil production as the adrenal glands help us cope with stressful events. Unfortunatly, when we have a big event and may want to look our best, blemishes may appear because we are "stressed".
Food- Blamed for triggering acne.... Salt...MSG....Cheese.....Processed and Fast Foods. Increasing water intake, and eating fresh vegetables and fruit, will help to decrease breakouts.
Cosmetics and Skin Care products- Certain ingredients can aggravate acne. Fatty ingredients such as waxes and oils can clog pores and irritate follicles causing cells to build up. Products rich in emollients and occlusive products are too heavy for problem skin types. Many makeup products are made with solids and fatty ingredients. Stick to mineral makeups that do not occlude the skin and provide vitamins and minerals designed to aid in skin protection.
